In Japanese, the concept of “MA” 間 translates as “space” or “interval”. However, its meaning goes beyond a simple physical notion.
1. MA refers to the physical or temporal space that exists between objects, events, or people. It is the pause or void that gives form and meaning to the surrounding elements. For example, in traditional Japanese architecture, the empty spaces between structures are as important as the structures themselves, as they allow for the circulation of light and ventilation.
2. In the arts, such as music, painting, theater (such as Noh) and poetry, MA represents the importance of pauses, silence and the use of empty space. In music, it is the silence between notes that shapes the melody. In calligraphy, it is the blank space on the paper that balances the ink strokes.
3. In communication, MA can refer to the pause in a conversation that allows one to reflect and formulate an appropriate response, or to the interpersonal space that is maintained to respect the privacy and comfort of others.
The concept of MA is a cornerstone in Japanese culture that profoundly affects how space and time are conceived and experienced. This idea not only influences art and architecture, but is also integrated into daily life, social interaction and philosophy. It is an active element that gives form, meaning and beauty.

Object.
In the moments of greatest tension, the Japanese concept becomes an ally. MA, which embodies the in-between space, the pause, and the breath between elements, finds a profound expression in the simple act of taking an object between the hands and bringing it to the mouth, seeking refuge and comfort in the breath.
This gesture, as natural as it is instinctive, encapsulates the essence of MA. By holding an object, be it a cup of hot tea, a rosary, or a smooth stone, we are creating a bridge between the outside and our inner self. The space that forms between our hands and the object is not just a void; it is a space filled with opportunity and calm. It is in this MA that we open up a space for respite, a conscious pause in the maelstrom of the anxious mind.
Primitive.
The art and craft of the primitive reflects an innate understanding of the MA. The sculptures and artifacts of early cultures not only occupy space, but dialogue with the emptiness that surrounds them. In the rawness of their forms, we find an unspoken wisdom about the importance of silence that gives meaning to the full.
When we bring the object close to our mouth, we invite the air to enter and leave with intention. At this moment, the MA is the vital breath, the space between inhalation and exhalation, the void becomes a refuge, where the rhythm of our breathing is regulated. By concentrating we allow the flow of breath to find its natural rhythm again. This in-between space acts as a container where nervous energy dissolves and is transformed into something more manageable and less overwhelming.
This act of approaching and breathing is not only a simple exchange of air; it is a ritual of self-care, an affirmation of the now. The object reminds us that in the space between things - between the object and our mouth; in breathing - there is serenity and control.
It is in this intimate act of connection with the object that each inhalation becomes a gentle taking of control and each exhalation a release of tension. The empty space between each breath is where peace is found and anxiety fades.
